Description
Usually the touristic horses and carriages in Cordoba Spain hung out on the other side of the street. But on this one day as I rounded the corner, one of them was parked under the arched doorway of the Mezquita. I hurried to take a shot, only to notice afterwards that they were like all drivers of the carriages given the similarity in their hats! I guess business was slow that day. Each of the doors of the Mezquita has a name, the one of the right is the Puerta de San Ildefonso and the one farther back on the left is the Postigo del Palacio. One website stated “The doors were not simply designed to provide access to the building, but rather as essential elements in understanding the ceremony taking place within it.” However, I haven’t been able to find any more information about these two doors. During Moorish times, the many open doors of the Mosque let in light which made it brighter. When the Mosque was converted to a Cathedral almost all the outer doors were sealed, which is how most of the doors are today. The historic core of Cordoba has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage site.
