Description
One thing you generally don’t think about with glaciers is the ability to go inside of it, to a cave deep within the glacier with the awesome might of the glacier all around you. Yet this something you can experience in Iceland where ice caves form in some of the glaciers during winter. One of most famous caves is the Anaconda cave in Vatnajökull glacier, the largest glacier in Europe. Ice caves are natural phenomena that are formed in glaciers during winter. Most often they are formed by water running through or under the glacier and new caves are formed every year. However, the cave in Vatnajökull has been around in more or less the same place since 2011. Each day could be a different experience as a bright sunny day would bring a more translucent look to the cave. Our visit was on an overcast day, definitely bringing about a darker and more ‘cave-like’ experience. It was difficult for our eyes to adjust since there was the bright daylight from the entrance that is off to the right (out of the picture) and the distant light of the cave exit in the distance. You had to be certain where you put your feet crossing this little footbridge unless you wanted to step into the icy and fast-moving stream!
