Description
Like the nearby Diamond Beach, the mystical Jökulsárlón glacial lagoon on the south coast of Iceland is a constantly changing scene as bits of the retreating nearby glacier break off and float through the lagoon to a river and out to sea. We were reminded of this as we viewed the river choked with icebergs one evening and decided to go back in the morning for some photos. By morning, all the icebergs had moved out to the Atlantic Ocean! A century ago the entire area was frozen but an increase in the world’s temperature since then caused the vast frozen landscape to collapse into a mass of shattered ice and liquid to create the lagoon. The ethereal lagoon is a part of Vatnajökull National Park. Vatnajökull and its surrounding area compose Iceland's largest national park, and the second largest national park in Europe. Vatnajökull National Park was added to UNESCO's World Heritage list in 2019,
