Description
No, it’s not a bookshelf, it’s the façade of the Þórbergur Museum and Cultural center in southeast Iceland. Located at the Hali Country Hotel, the cultural center has an exhibition dedicated to the 20th century Icelandic writer Þórbergur Þórðarson (1888 – 1974) who grew up on the Hali farm. If it weren’t for the terrible weather, I might have have visited the exhibition and would have missed one of the more entertaining exhibits I’ve seen in a long time! It is billed as one of a ‘new generation’ of museums in Iceland. providing more interesting and informative interpretations of the local history, maritime and turf farm collections. During much of the author’s life, Iceland’s “Ring Road” did not exist here and the community was geographically isolated. Countless glacial rivers hindered travel between communities. Above the settlements were impressive mountains and the mighty Vatnajökull, Europe’s largest glacier. Below was the turbulent Atlantic ocean, where waves crashed onto a harbourless coast. In this closed-off world, life was characterized by a struggle with the powers of nature, written with dry wit in the author’s quirky style and illustrated by photographs, artifacts and recreations of home life.
