Description
I just love how these churches abut other buildings in the neighborhood, although this one has a relatively spacious plaza in front! This is the Iglesia de San Millan, a fine Romanesque church located outside the old walls of Segovia Spain. It was built between 1111 and 1124, and is one of the oldest churches in the city. It dominates the plaza off of Avenida de Fernandex Ladreda, which leads to the famous aqueduct and passes another Romanesque church, San Clemente. Patterned closely on the cathedral of Jaca in Aragon, San Milln is especially notable for its pre-Romanesque mozarbic tower and porticoes with abundant Romanesque figurative carvings. The lovely arches site at an angle to the buildings on the adjacent street, providing a wonderful sense of depth.
