Early Saturday morning and just a few people are out on the Piazza del Duomo (Cathedral Square) in Milan. There are a few early morning walkers and, what seems ubiquitous in these days of showcase weddings, the bridal couple having photos taken. This main piazza marks the center of the city, both in a geographic sense and because of its importance from an artistic, cultural, and social point of view. Rectangular in shape, the piazza includes some of the most important buildings of Milan and it is by far the foremost tourist attraction of the city. In only a few short hours it will be packed with lines of tourists waiting to get into the cathedral, shoppers going to the Galleria off to the right, residents making their everyday way, buskers, hucksters, pickpockets, you name it. Il Duomo, or the Metropolitan Cathedral-Basilica of the Nativity of Saint Mary, dominates the square. The Gothic cathedral took nearly six centuries to complete.
