Description
The Interislander Ferry runs from Picton on the South Island of New Zealand to Wellington, New Zealand’s capital on the North Island. During our several days in Picton, we were lucky to have lodgings overlooking the harbor and we watched the ferry come and go many times a day. We marveled at the speed and efficiency that it came into the harbor, turned 180 degrees in place, and backed into the dock, as well as with the speed and efficiency that it apparently offloaded and onloaded passengers, baggage, trucks and cars, and freight. The airlines could take some lessons from their procedures! Despite the fact that I generally don’t have positive feelings about large ships, I developed a strange fascination with the Interislander, looking forward to watching every arrival/departure and eagerly anticipating our crossing. The crossing from Picton to Wellington cruises first through the Queen Charlotte Sound where the land on both sides provides spectacular scenery. It then moves into the open water of Cook Strait where your imagination can soar as you picture yourself a sailor of days gone by! We were fortunate that the day of our crossing was bright and blue, making “one of the most beautiful ferry journeys in the world and one of New Zealand's most iconic tourism experiences” even better!
