Description
It’s the most prominent structure that you see on the skyline of Invercargill, New Zealand as you make the final approach to the airport. It’s Invercargill’s iconic Water Tower. The foundation-laying ceremony for the tower took place in 1888 and the tower was functional a year later. The motivation for the building was the ever-present threat of fire in colonial towns with their mix of wooden buildings and dry summer spells. 19th Century New Zealand suffered a great many fires and supplying adequate pressurized water was always difficult. Invercargill’s town leaders decided to build a water tower but taxpayers weren’t too keen on an ugly metal structure in the midst of their town! So the architect-engineer at the time suggested blunting criticism by disguising the 300,000-litre steel tank with an elaborate brick tower. And so it was born!
