Description
The start of the walk to Island Bay on Great Barrier Island, New Zealand, is through some bush where you can’t quite see the ocean. As a result, it is amazingly quiet and you can listen to the birds. But soon enough you come into sight of the sea from a ridge top, and then into earshot of the soothing waves as you descend toward the bay. Ahead is Motu Tohora, the tail of the Southern Right Whale, also known as Rabbit Island (not to be confused with the 10 or more other Rabbits Islands in New Zealand)! We spent a lovely rest break here wandering the rocky shoreline. I took lots of photos while it was the ‘cloudy’ part of a partly cloudy day. Right when we decided to hike on, the sun came out and things looked entirely different! Naturally I had to go back and do some of the photos again!
