When I drove into Port Townsend WA one evening, I had only planned to find a place to stay and leave early the next day. I hadn't read anything about the town but after only a few minutes there I discovered there wouldn't be enough time! One of the first things I saw when I drove into town was the big building on the hill. I got a chance to visit early the next morning and imagine my delight to find it was a county courthouse, one of my favorite photographic subjects (after lighthouses of course!). The Jefferson County Courthouse is in a Romanesque architectural style, as popularized by Henry Hobson Richardson, with a 125-foot bell tower. Approved for construction in 1890 by the Jefferson County Commissioners, the Romanesque style courthouse was designed by Seattle architect W. A. Ritchie, and built at an estimated cost of $150,000.00. The Clock Tower was installed in November 1892. The original plans called for a tower 140 feet tall, but for some unknown reason the tower measures only 124 feet, 4 inches. The bell rings out every hour of the day.
