Description
The Jefferson Memorial is one of the most popular attraction in Washington DC, and it was our first stop on a beautiful sunny but cold afternoon. After seeing this site and walking all over the mall, we passed by here later in the day as we headed for the parking lot. We were treated to the warm glow of 'the golden hour' lighting up the site! As many know, the Jefferson Memorial is a dome-shaped rotunda that honors our third president, Thomas Jefferson. The memorial is one of the most impressive sites in Washington, DC. A 19-foot bronze statue of Jefferson is surrounded by passages from the Declaration of Independence and Jeffersons other writings. It is a neoclassical building designed by the architect John Russell Pope. Construction began in 1938 and was completed in 1943; the bronze statue of Jefferson was added in 1947. The Jefferson Memorial is managed by the National Park Service under its National Mall and Memorial Parks division. In 2007, it was ranked fourth on the List of America's Favorite Architecture by the American Institute of Architects.
