When you visit Bonaventure Cemetery near Savannah, you inevitably get caught up in searching for the gravesites of the famous people buried there. One of them is Johnny Mercer and this is his family plot near the Wilmington River , the same river that inspired the lyrics to his song Moon River. Johnny Mercer is buried next to his parents and his wife (behind the bench, to the right of the cross). In the corner of the plot is a bench (shown in the foreground) with the names of many of his famous songs inscribed on it. The family plot is surrounded by lovely old oaks dripping with spanish moss. Johnny Mercer was born in 1909 and died in 1976. Mercer was a cofounder of Capital Records. Johnny Mercer wrote many famous songs that are still remembered today. Many of songs were used in movies and he won four Academy Awards for his works. The Mercer House in Savannah was built by his grandfather and was the setting for the murder in the Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil book and movie....
