Canyon Trail in Kasha-Katuwe Tent Rocks National Monument is a 1.5 mile one-way trek through this slot canyon up to a mesa top for a panoramic view of the entire area. When I first started out on the hike, I wondered why I was so out of breath on the gently sloping part of the hike. I read afterwards that the trail ranges in elevation from 5,570’ to 6,760’ above sea level so I didn’t feel so bad! The park is famous for its cone shaped rock formations which were formed from volcanic eruptions 6-7 million years ago. Weathering and erosion of the volcanic layers have created the slot canyons and conical tent rocks we see today. Kasha-Katuwe Tent Rocks National Monument is located approximately 40 miles (64 km) southwest of Santa Fe, New Mexico, near Cochiti Pueblo. It is managed by the Bureau of Land Management and was established as a U.S. National Monument in January 2001 by President Bill Clinton. Kasha-Katuwe means "white cliffs" in the Pueblo language Keresan, the name taken from some of the white layers of volcanic rock.
