Description
From the grounds of St Barbara's cathedral in Kutna Hora, CR, you get an excellent view of the town including the Jesuit College on the left to the Church of St James on the right. Kutna Hora was one of the most important political and economic centres of Bohemia in the 14th and 15th centuries. Its medieval centre and the churches are outstanding examples of architectural development and testify to the cultural vivacity of the area. The town is built above the steep descent of the Vrchlice Creek, in the Kutna Hora plateau, 254 m above sea level and some 60 km east of Prague, developed as a result of the exploitation of the silver mines. The prosperity of Kutna Hora silver mines reached its climax in the 14th and 15th centuries when the city became one of the richest places in Europe. The Jesuit College in Kutna Hora was built on a dominant site, and features prominently in views of the town, forming a striking part of its characteristic silhouette. It is the work of architect Giovanni Domenico Orsi (1633 - 1679). The starkly beautiful Gothic Church of St. James with its slender, 86 m tall tower, is a defining landmark on the Kutnďż˝ Hora skyline. It is the oldest church in town. Its construction began in 1330 and ended in 1420. The church was originally projected with two towers but it soon turned out that the ground beneath was too unstable due to silver mining to hold both. The unfinished part of the second tower is clearly visible on the church exterior. For the unusual height of its tower, the church was also referred to as the Tall or High Church until the 17th century. The interior combines Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque artifacts.
