Description
Several years ago I visited Barcelona only to find out that the exterior of La Pedrera (one of Gaudi's masterpieces) was undergoing restoration. The restoration had started the day before my visit, according to the staff! What luck is that!? So when I was able to visit again in 2016, one of the first things I wanted to do was to see the exterior! If I thought I could ponder its beauty in solitude, I was sadly mistaken! The building sits diagonally on a very busy corner along Passeig de Gracia. There are hoardes of people coming and going, in and out of the building, to and fro and the crosswalk. Cars constantly passing through the intersection. Hardly a quiet moment! The building's distinctive trademark is the uneven stone facade which ripples around the corner. It was constructed between 1906 and 1912. Architecturally it is considered structurally innovative, with a self-supporting stone front and columns, and floors free of load bearing walls. Also innovative is the underground garage, as Mila was one of the first auto owners in the city. For its uniqueness and artistic and heritage value it has received major recognition and in 1984 was inscribed on UNESCO World Heritage List.
