My day trip to Lake Como north of Milan Italy was a spur of the moment decision so I went without much of a plan except to ride the ferry from Como to Bellagio and Varenna. As we approached Varenna, I noticed a castle high atop a hill. For someone who loves a good climb, this was the perfect way to spend my time in Varenna. The view from the top is spectacular with a commanding view of Lake Como looking to the north towards the Alps and Switzerland and also to the south toward Bellagio (as shown here). You also see a few of the many ferries making their way across the lake, transporting both pa8ssengers and cars. After a mostly cloudy day, this was a welcome break for some sun and blue skies. The castle itself is called the Castello di Vezio and sits above a little village by the same name that you pass through on the hike to the castle. It was definitely worth the hike!
