Description
I stopped at this overlook in Lake Meredith National Recreation Area near Amarillo TX to enjoy the early morning light and take some photos. It was quite a surprise to see this recreation area on the map...a lake in Texas...that was an oddity, so I figured I had to check it out. It's not a heavily visited area from what I could tell so my visit there was peaceful and quiet. The few campers I met were rejoicing over the 'high' water levels, even though it was only 12.9% full at 53'. In June of 2014 it was only 1.2% full and back on August 7, 2013 the lake reached its all-time low 26.14'. Lake Meredith is a reservoir formed by Sanford Dam on the Canadian River at Sanford, Texas. Historically it was a major source of drinking water for Amarillo and Lubbock, Texas, but in 2003 the Canadian River Municipal Water Authority announced that it would reduce allocations to its member cities due to an ongoing drought and a continued drop in the water level. As of 2008, the lake continued to hit record lows. In 2011 water withdrawals from Lake Meredith ceased.
