This beautiful morning scene greeted us in New Zealand, showing the Frankton Arm of Lake Wakatipu in Queenstown on the South Island. New Zealand has many walking and hiking trails, this one leading along the lake side and into the city of Queenstown. On an early morning walk you meet residents and tourists alike taking advantage of this wonderful resource. Lake Wakatipu is an inland lake (finger lake) in the southwest corner of the Otago Region. 15,000 years ago during the last ice age, a huge glacier moving from the north west carved out what is now Lake Wakatipu. With a length of 80 kilometres (50 mi), it is New Zealand's longest lake, and at 291 sq km (112 sq mi), its third largest. The lake is also very deep, its floor being below sea level, with a maximum depth of 380 metres (1,250 ft). It is at an altitude of 310 metres (1,020 ft), towards the southern end.
