On April 19, 1995, Timothy McVeigh parked a Ryder rental truck filled with explosives in front of the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building in Oklahoma City, OK, USA. The resulting explosion at 9:02 am killed 168 people. This memorial was constructed on the location to honor the victims, survivors, rescuers, and all who were affected by the event. In a larger sense, we across the country and around the world were affected by the event, and you will find tears welling up, maybe even running down your cheeks, when you step on the grounds. Nearly 25 years on, the wounds are still there. The symbolism of the many facets of the memorial is powerful. This is one of the two Gates of Time, this one inscribed with the time 9:01 which was the last moment of peace, and its opposite inscribed 9:03, marking the first moments of recovery. The inscriptions of time on the gates face inward toward one another and the Reflecting Pool. The outside of each gate bears the inscription: “We come here to remember Those who were killed, those who survived and those changed forever. May all who leave here know the impact of violence. May this memorial offer comfort, strength, peace, hope and serenity.” The Reflecting Pool is just a thin layer of water flowing over polished black granite. The water is actually flowing from east to west (from 9:01 to 9:03 gate) but you can still see crystal clear reflections when the wind is calm. The memorial is located in downtown Oklahoma City on the former site of the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building, which was destroyed in the 1995 bombing. The national memorial was authorized on October 9, 1997, by President Bill Clinton's signing of the Oklahoma City National Memorial Act of 1997. It was administratively listed on the National Register of Historic Places the same day.
