Description
Step back in time at Lawson Tower. If you just happen to be driving by and don't know about this tower (as I was), you do a double take and wonder what the heck is THAT!? After I found a brochure with the town's historical sights, I went back for a second look and some photos. Lawson Tower in Scituate Massachusetts is a historic tower built in the style of a European castle turret. It is 153 feet tall with 123 steps to the top. The tower was built in 1902 by multi-millionaire Boston businessman Thomas W. Lawson to cloak a 276,000-gallon water tank across from his "Dreamwold" estate, and added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1976. Conflicting theories also arise as to the exact tower Lawsons creation was patterned after. Early research showed the possibility of a tower at Stahleck Castle on the Rhine River in Germany as being the template, while new research reveals similarities between Lawson Tower and a spa at Bad Ems, Germany. In any event, the result is the most photographed, most beautiful water tower in the world. And most expensive! Lawson commissioned the Meneely Bell Foundry of West Troy, New York, to install ten bells at the top of the tower. These bells range in size from three hundred to three thousand pounds. This chime system was originally designed to be played either from the bell room eighty feet above the ground or on the console of the clavier room. Lawson, a financier and author, built the tower in 1902 and the Scituate Water Co. stopped using the tank inside in 1988. The tower is listed as both an American Water Landmark and to the National Register of Historic Places. It has become a popular touring site, featuring sweeping views of many local landmarks. The last decade has seen refurbishment of the bell system as well as reshingling of the structure.

The antique postcard look is perfect, Joan. I lived in this town (Scituate) for 19 years. Lawson Tower was just down the street, and we always enjoyed the chimes when some bell ringer wanted to give the world a treat.

What fun to find Lawson Tower in the Atlantic Coast gallery. I lived in Scituate for 19 years, and would recognize this water tower on any thumbnail. Nicely processed, Joan. F/l
