Description
Leon County Courthouse in Centerville TX was built in 1886 during the ‘golden age’ of courthouse construction in Texas. It is the third courthouse for Leon County, the others being built in 1847 and 1858. However, it doesn’t have the grand features of some of the other courthouses build around that time. The style, referred to as Renaissance Revival or Greek Revival, is characterized by repetitive features. It was built on the same plot of land as a previous courthouse which burned down in November of 1885. Some of the bricks from the former courthouse, which were locally made, were used in the current courthouse. Not that long ago the courthouse was in severe decay and the building was condemned. The outer brick walls were being supported by steel beams to keep them from bulging outwards any further and the front entrance portico was badly deteriorated. It was restored from 2000 to 2007. The full restoration to a 1909 date included adding restrooms (there were none), an elevator, electrical and mechanical systems, a new slate roof, and a complete restoration of the original finishes. Additionally, new steel trusses and columns were added at minimal intrusion into the historic spaces in order to stabilize the building. Leon County was authorized in 1846 but the county seat wasn’t moved to Centerville until 1851.
