Description
Fishing above, restaurants below, the view in front. What's not to like?! The Galata Bridge crosses the Golden Horn in Istanbul, Turkey, and is the symbolic link between the traditional old city of Istanbul (site of the Topkapi Palace, the Blue Mosque, and the Hagia Sophia) and the "new" districts of Galata, Beyoglu, Sisli, and Harbiye (where many western, Latin, and Catholic foreign merchants and diplomats lived and worked over the centuries). The current Galata bridge was built by the Turkish construction company STFA to link the current "new" Karakoy and the "old" Eminonu, and was completed in 1994. The northern end of the bridge in Karakoy was a Genoese colony during Byzantine times. The southern end of the bridge in Eminonu is near to the Egyptian Spice Market and the New Mosque. It is a bascule bridge (or drawbridge), 490 m long and 42 m wide. It has three vehicular lanes and one walkway in each direction, along with tram tracks. The tram tracks allow the Istanbul Tram to run from Zeytinburnu near Ataturk International Airport, to Kabatas, near Dolmabahce Palace and Taksim Square. This is one of the few moveable bridges in the world that carry electrified rail tracks. The market area on the first floor of the bridge opened in 2003 and is the site of touristy restaurants and cafes.
