Description
It's the biggest canyon no one has heard of and the second largest canyon in the country: Palo Duro Canyon located near the Texas panhandle city of Amarillo. One of the best-known and the major signature feature of the canyon is the Lighthouse Rock. It's a 6 mile roundtrip hike to the rock and definitely worth the trip! Once you make the final climb and stand atop this tabletop, you feel very powerful! But it's a hot hike and do not minimize the importance of bringing ALOT of water! The Canyon is 120 miles long, as much as 20 miles wide, and has a maximum depth of more than 800 feet. Its elevation at the rim is 3,500 feet above sea level. Palo Duro Canyon was formed by water erosion from the Prairie Dog Town Fork of the Red River. Palo Duro Canyon State Park opened on July 4, 1934. The Civilian Conservation Corps of the 1930's constructed most of the buildings and roads still in use by park staff and visitors. I am thankful today for the investment made by the government over 80 years ago to preserve this wonderful treasure and make it accessible to us nearly a century later.
