Description

Named for an imaginary spirit of the air, the long-tailed sylph is a striking South American hummingbird with an extremely long tail of shimmering iridescent blue and green feathers. Male is mostly emerald green with blue-green throat and long forked tail. Female is much different, with shorter tail, spotted throat, buffy belly, and short white mustache stripe. It is primarily found on the east slope of the Andes from Venezuela to Bolivia, in foothills and subtropical zones within cloud forest and at edges. This one was photographed in Ecuador on the eastern side of the continental divide in Ecuador at an altitude of 2700 m (8858 ft).
