Description
While there are lot of interesting rock formations at Kasha-Katuwe Tent Rocks National Monument between Santa Fe and Albuquerque NM, the ‘tent rocks’ part of the name comes from the conical structures seen in this photo. When you first come upon them, you do a bit of a double take, wondering if they are indeed some kind of hut or tent! Some of the conical structures are just a few feet high while others are as high as 90’ tall. The structures formed as a result of volcanic eruptions that occurred between six and seven million years ago in the Jemez volcanic field. The eruptions left a layered field of sandstone, pumice, ash, and tuff over 1,000 feet thick. The formations seen today evolved as a result of differential erosion of the different layers. The overlying layer of sandstone was more resistant to erosion, so that residual pieces of sandstone formed caprocks over the erosional cones and pedestal rocks and provided some protection from further erosion. Eventually the capstones are undermined by erosion, toppling the capstone and exposing the cone underneath to more rapid (geologically-speaking) erosion. Tent Rocks were a little-known BLM site before becoming a National Monument in 2001.
