Description
On many of the coastal hiking trails in New Zealand, there are high tide trails and low tide trails. So you have to know your tide tables if you want to take advantage of the low tide trail, usually the shorter of the two. We didn’t have much of a choice on a 16km track on Stewart Island. We needed to start in the mornign so the outbound leg had us traversing the high tide track at Little River. At this time, the water was high up under the boardwalk all the way across. In the afternoon however, we got to enjoy the beach at low tide when the water was far out in the bay.

Tides are so amazing -- that one can walk on a beach one moment, and wade through it the next (if lucky) is an amazing phenomenon. What a beautiful beach!
