Description
The sun peeks through the threatening rain clouds in Merida Spain to provide dramatic lighting on the modern Lusitania Bridge. The bridge was built over the Guadiana River in to take the road traffic away from the ancient stone Romano bridge, which has since become a footbridge. The bridge takes its name from the fact that Emerita Augusta (present day Merida) was the former capital of the ancient Iberian Roman province of Lusitania. The architect was Santiago Calatrava, well-known in modern days for his characteristic designs including the City of Arts and Sciences in Valencia Spain, the Margaret Hunt Hill Bridge in Dallas TX, the Montjuic Communications Tower for the Barcelona 1992 Summer Olympics, and the new World Trade Center transportation hub in New York City.
