Description
This basin in front of the south facade of the Luxembourg Palace in Paris is used for miniature boat sailing on sunny, warmer days. But in the early evening of a chilly early April day, there wasn't much of that. Even the resident ducks were hiding in their little house to the right of the fountain. Still, the architecture does not fail to impress and lots of adults were sitting around the fountain enjoying the evening. The Luxembourg Palace was originally built (1615-1645) to be the royal residence of the regent Marie de Medicis, mother of Louis XIII of France. After the Revolution (1799-1805), it was refashioned into a legislative building and subsequently greatly enlarged and remodeled (1835-1856). The building was also used for the peace conference of 1946, and since 1958 it houses the French Senate. Today, the gardens around it are free and open to the public, forming the largest green space in Paris.
