Description
I'll be the first to admit that my Spanish isn't very good. I can order a beer at least. So it's not much of a surprise that "Bolsa de Madrid" puzzled me as I walked by on my way from here to there. Certainly the building was magnificent, but on a Saturday afternoon, it was deserted, no traffic in and out. Perfect for pictures, so take photos now and figure it out later. Bolsa? Bag? Bag of Madrid? Surely not. Hmmm....It left me wondering. Well, it turns out that 'bag' is not the only meaning of bolsa in Spanish, as you have figured out from the title. Bolsa de Madrid is the Madrid Stock Exchange, the largest and most international of Spain's four regional stock exchanges (the others are located in Barcelona, Valencia, and Bilbao). The Bolsa de Madrid was officially founded in 1831. The building is called Palace of la Bolsa de Madrid or Palacio de la Bolsa de Madrid. The building was given the heritage listing Bien de Interes Cultural in 1992. Now I'm glad I stopped for a few pictures!
