Description
A distinctive feature of the street signs in Madrid Spain is that they often come with pictures. The story goes that medieval street signs included pictures so the illiterate could read them and figure out where they were. The pictures are often associated with a feature of the street or with the occupation of the people working on that street, such as Calle de Bordadores where needleworkers likely plied their trade. Google translate indicates that Botoneras means keypads, which of course have buttons as the picture seems to indicate! The origin of the other street names eludes me but the pictures remain fascinating.
