Description
We were lucky to be in Yellowstone National Park at the right time in order to catch the short time period that Harlequin Ducks visit the area. Typically Harlequin Ducks are found in coastal waters but in the spring they migrate inland and Yellowstone National Park is one place to find them. Harlequins prefer fast moving water, which makes LeHardy Rapids on the Yellowstone River a perfect place. Breeding male Harlequin Ducks are a spectacular slate blue with white stripes and chestnut sides. The head is elaborately marked with a white crescent in front of the eye, and chestnut highlights on the brow.

Beautiful portrait! I have never seen one in real life, and probably never will. So I appreciate the photo for that reason as well.
