Description
This male Harlequin Duck seems to be looking at me a little skeptically, maybe wondering about all the curious behavior of the two-legged creatures on the river’s shore. We were lucky to be in Yellowstone National Park at the right time in order to catch the short time period that Harlequin Ducks visit the area. Typically Harlequin Ducks are found in coastal waters but in the spring they migrate inland and Yellowstone National Park is one place to find them. Harlequins prefer fast moving water, which makes LeHardy Rapids on the Yellowstone River a perfect place. Breeding male Harlequin Ducks are a spectacular slate blue with white stripes and chestnut sides. The head is elaborately marked with a white crescent in front of the eye, and chestnut highlights on the brow.

Wonderful composition Joan. He does seem to be looking at you quite skeptically. If you could only read his mind....:>)
