Description
The first thing that comes to mind at this scene at Mammoth Hot Springs in Yellowstone National Park is ‘hot mess’. But not in a bad way! In the afternoon light, the terraces of this thermal area seem to be enveloped in steam. The light reflects off the water droplets of the steam, giving an inferno-like look to the site! But still….not in a bad way! Mammoth Hot Springs are the main attraction of the Mammoth District of Yellowstone. These features are quite different from thermal areas elsewhere in the park in that they which grow and change quickly due to the softer nature of the underlying rock (limestone). As hot water rises through limestone, dissolved calcium and bicarbonate are carried to the surface of the terraces. Carbon dioxide then escapes as gas and the carbonate combines with calcium to precipitate as travertine. Just like your kitchen counter….
