Description
Late afternoon in the Cinque Terre town of Manarola finds tourists still gathering in the warm sunshine in the small piazza above the 'harbor' and a few hardy individuals enjoying a swim in the deep water pool. The water was so clear and clean that it looked very inviting for a swim! If you look closely you can see that boats are kept up on the piazza far above the water level! This is due to the lack of protected harbor space, the rocky coast, and the occurrence of storms. The boats are lowered into the protected pool below with an I-beam and crane. My Italian isn't much, but I believe the writing on the wall warns of not standing below the hoist. Cinque Terre is a string of five centuries-old seaside villages on the rugged Italian Riviera coastline in the Liguria region of Italy. In each of the five towns of the region, colorful houses and ancient vineyards cling to steep terraces. The five towns are a hikers' tourism resort paradise. The coastline, the five villages, and the surrounding hillsides are all part of the Cinque Terre National Park and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

I'm always fascinated by these mountain towns. How did they do that!? You've certainly captured this one well.
Joan Carroll replied:
thank you sharon! We...in the modern world.....think we are so clever but oftentimes we find that those of earlier eras were more so!
