Description
The cathedral in Siena Italy (Duomo of Santa Maria Assunta) is somewhat unique in that not only the walls and ceilings and altars are highly decorated, but also the floors! For almost two centuries between about 1373 and 1547, 40 artists paved the marble floors with scenes from the Old Testament, allegories and intricate patterns. Giorgio Vasari described it as "the most beautiful, largest and most magnificent floor that ever was made". Shown here is only a small example in front of the main altar. The most precious of the patterns are covered most of the year to protect from wear and tear.
