Description
Lighthouse Friends.com says " Folks seems to find Marblehead's brown skeleton tower either charmingly unusual or downright ugly". Edward Rowe Snow wrote in The Lighthouses of New England, " ..it is to be realized that lighthouses are for utility and not for beauty, but in this case it is especially unfortunate that beauty and utility were not combined." It is the only one of its type in New England, but there are similar ones in the mid-Atlantic and in Florida. This lighthouse is located in Chandler Hovey Park on Marblehead Neck in a lovely, albeit small, park with free parking. It's a perfect spot for watching the summer sailboat races. Marblehead's larger harbor became an important center for trade and fishing by the early 1800s, and funds were appropriated for a lighthouse in 1834. The current tower, taller at 105' than the first, was erected in 1896.
