Description
Standing the test of time, and as visionary as the honoree, the official vision statement for the Martin Luther King Jr Memorial states in part: “Dr. King championed a movement that draws fully from the deep well of America's potential for freedom, opportunity, and justice. His vision of America is captured in his message of hope and possibility for a future anchored in dignity, sensitivity, and mutual respect; a message that challenges each of us to recognize that America's true strength lies in its diversity of talents.” The Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial honors the minister, social activist, and Nobel Peace Prize winner who led the civil rights movement in the US from the mid-1950s until his assassination in 1968. It is located in West Potomac Park next to the National Mall in Washington, D.C., not far from the Lincoln Memorial from which King delivered his famous “I Have A Dream” speech in 1963. The inspiration for the memorial design is a line from this speech: "Out of the mountain of despair, a stone of hope." The memorial opened to the public on August 22, 2011. Although this is not the first memorial to an African American in Washington, D.C., King is the first African American honored with a memorial on or near the National Mall and only the fourth non-President to be memorialized in such a way. The official address of the monument, 1964 Independence Avenue, S.W., commemorates the year the Civil Rights Act of 1964 became law.

Great composition Joan! The non-orthogonal position offers life to the statue: MLK lives! M/L/Tw
