Description
A stormy day provides a dramatic sky to match the dramatic cliffs of Mather Gorge in Great Falls Park. Mather Gorge is a river gorge south and just downriver of Great Falls on the border of Maryland and Virginia. The gorge is named after Stephen Mather, the first director of the National Park Service. The gorge is cut by the Potomac River and is, for the most part, lined on both sides by cliffs. The Potomac here is wild and remote, although it is less than a dozen miles from the White House.
