Description
It may not be the first thing you do when you go to Budapest, but you will probably walk across the Chain Bridge sometime during your first day! How can you resist? Besides everyone else is doing it. Walking west toward Castle Hill you see Matthias Church (with the ornate steeple) to the north, with the smaller spires of Fisherman's Bastion directly in front of it. In the foreground is an area of Buda called Vizivaros (Watertown). Thus Vizivaros is the area of Budapest located between the Castle District and the Western bank of the Danube. The area gained its name in the Middle Ages due to constant flooding. It was originally inhabited by artisans and fishermen who, consequently remained poorer than their neighbors on Castle Hill. Today it is low in tourist sights but does provide lovely architectural frontage on the Danube.
