Description
The history of Matthias Church (Matyas Church) in Budapest includes many reincarnations as various nationalities and religions ruled the area. The latest restoration was in 1873-96 by Frigyes Schulek in the neo-Gothic style. These restorations took place in preparation for the millennial celebrations to celebrate the country's 1,000th birthday in 1896. The main portal is decorated with bas-reliefs created by Lajos Lantai. Above the portal is a large neo-Gothic rose window, an exact replica of the original window.
