Description
Adjacent to the Tomb of the Unknowns at Arlington National Cemetery (Virginia, USA) is the Memorial Amphitheater, the largest structure on the cemetery grounds, dating from 1920. On a hot and sunny summer day, the white marble is blindingly bright. Not surprisingly, the amphitheater is deserted despite the crowds visiting the Tomb of the Unknowns only steps away. The amphitheater is enclosed by a white marble oval colonnade, topped with a frieze inscribe with the names of 44 battles from the Revolutionary Way through the Spanish American War. The names of 14 U.S. Army generals and 14 U.S. Navy admirals prior to World War I are inscribed on each side of the amphitheater stage. The amphitheater is used for three major ceremonies each year: on Easter, Memorial Day, and Veterans Day. I thought it was interesting to read the items placed in a sealed box in the cornerstone (laid on October 13, 1915 by President Woodrow Wilson): the Bible, the Declaration of Independence, the US Constitution, a 1915 US flag, designs and plans for the amphitheater, L’Enfant’s map design of the city of Washington DC, autograph of the amphitheater commission, one of each US coin in use in 1915, one of each US postage stamp in use in 1915, 1914 map of Washington DC, The Congressional Directory, Body’s City Directory for the District of Columbia, Autographed photo of President Woodrow Wilson, the cornerstone dedication program, and the Evening Star newspaper account of the ceremonies, and the campaign to build the amphitheater. Wouldn’t you just love to have a look at those items?!
