Here is the heart of the old town of Menaggio (on the western shore shore of Lake Como, Italy) close to the harbor, featuring mostly 19th century buildings in the Italian alpine style painted in muted tones. The tower is of the Church of Santo Stefano. Because of Menaggio’s central location on the lake you can throw away plans of car travel and maybe even train travel while you are here. The ferries are the way to go on Lake Como! If you sit on the waterfront of many of the larger towns around Lake Como for any length of time, you will marvel at the complexity of the harbor operations…passenger ferries, car ferries, ferries going north, ferries going south, ferries serving only certain parts of the lake. Taking the ferries also gives you wonderful views of the town’s waterfront such as on this ferry from Varenna. Once in Menaggio, spend some time wandering the old town narrow streets and alleys or head up into the hills for some hiking and great views of the lake!
