I was driving from here to there in South Dakota, trying to avoid interstates and see more small roads and towns. I plugged in the destination and away I went. I hit an unpaved section of the road, but thought nothing of it, thinking that it would only be a short stretch. But it went on. And on. I kept thinking ‘surely it will end soon’. There weren’t many signs of ‘civilization’, no houses, no cars. I kept checking and rechecking my GPS. What if I got a flat tire? I started hallucinating that I’d be found someday, a skeleton with a hat, holding an empty water bottle and a camera. Just like the cartoon pictures. So I figured I may as well document the beautiful day that it all happened.
