The Southern fur seal (also known as the Antarctic fur seal) is one of the animal species inhabiting Milford Sound, on the South Island of New Zealand. It is also probably the species whose sighting is most anticipated by the visitors. The fur seals inhabit in the fiord all year round. There are much more agile on land compared to other seals such as the weddell, crabeater and elephant seals. There are a few locations around the fiord where the seals commonly congregate because the sloping rocks provide an easier way out of the water. Most of the fiord has vertical surfaces arising from the water, making basking in the sun impossible for these seals. Male Southern fur seals can reach 200kg (440lb) and can be up to four times larger than the females. These seals were hunted almost to extinction in the early 1800’s when their fur was sought by the fashion industry. Since then, these seals have made a great comeback and can be seen when cruising through Milford Sound.

My photographic goal is to travel the world in a curious yet respectful way, taking the time to see and understand the unique story of each place I visit. Wherever I go I want to walk every street, hike every trail, ride the bus or metro, climb every tower, walk around and through every monument, and then do it all over again when the light changes. In every place, light, mood, color, and...
