Description
The imposing facade of the Royal Museum of the Armed Forces and Military History in Brussels, located in the Cinquantenaire Park. The park itself is a lovely way to spend a relaxing few hours. If you are an avid military history buff, the museum is worth your time but for most tourists it is off the beaten path. But the complex itself is interesting to see and has a wonderful history. The ambitious 19th century Belgian King Leopold II wanted Brussels to rival Paris. In 1880 he celebrated the 50th anniversary of Belgian independence by buiding a monumental arch flanked by massive exhibition halls which today house the museums. If you are a fan of panoramic views, you can make a climb through the museum to the top of the arch. I got there one day 15 minutes before closing and had to race up to the top and hurry back down again, so check the hours if you are looking for a climb!
