Description
Many hikes in the Cinque Terre region of Italy, such as this one from Monterosso to Vernazza, take you through working vineyards. These vineyards are the result of work over the centuries to build terraces on the steep landscape to support the production of grapes and olives. Walk respectfully and lovingly through these vineyards, imagining the incredible hard work and dedication required to build and maintain them. While it was necessary long ago to hand carry everything needed to build, maintain, and harvest in the vineyards, today you can see these mysterious metal rails running through the vineyards. They hold small flatbed carts that can now carry materials up the slopes for building and maintenance and grapes down the slopes during the harvest. The coastline, the five villages, and the surrounding hillsides are all part of the Cinque Terre National Park and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
