Description
Not far from Barcelona is the mountain aerie of Montserrat. The name Montserrat means serrated mountain and it's easy to see why. After a train trip to a station in the valley below and a 'rack railway' ride up the mountain (in our case, through the cloud layer to the sunlight above), it feels like you are in another world. Even with the ubiquitous selfie-taking tourists. It is well known as the site of the Benedictine abbey, Santa Maria de Montserrat. This is the broad sunlit plaza you cross before getting to the courtyard of the Basilica. Montserrat has been of religious significance since pre-Christian times when a temple to worship Venus was built by the Romans. The first written mention of a monastery was in 888. It is Catalonia's most important religious retreat and groups of young people from Barcelona and all over Catalonia make overnight hikes at least once in their lives to watch the sunrise from the heights of Montserrat. Fun Fact: Columbus named a Caribbean island after this Catalan monastery.
