Description
Moraine Lake near Lake Louise in Banff National Park (Alberta Canada) is one of the several impossibly aqua blue glacial lakes in the Canadian Rockies. From atop the ‘rockpile’ you get the famous view that graced the Canadian 20 dollar that were issued from 1969 to 1979. On a still summer morning, the mountain reflections turquoise water is nothing short of breathtaking. The lake is situated in the Valley of the Ten Peaks, at an elevation of approximately 6,183 feet (1,885 m). The surrounding peaks of the Wenkchemna Range all top out at over 10,000’ (~3000 m). Its distinctive color is due to the refraction of light off fine-grained, silt-sized particles of rock, generated by the grinding of bedrock by the glaciers and deposited in the lake on a continual basis. The Canadian Rocky Mountain Parks of Banff, Jasper, Kootenay and Yoho along with three provincial parks comprise a UNESCO World Heritage site.
