Description
The Inuktitut name for the musk ox translates to “the bearded one”. Or you can go with the Woods Cree translations as “ugly moose” or “ugly bison”. Personally, I think that’s unfair! This charming fellow looks very ancient and wise, like the chief of the herd! He was seen at the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center, just north of the Kenai Peninsula in Alaska. This nonprofit wildlife sanctuary caters to orphaned or injured wildlife and is dedicated to conservation, research, education, and animal care. Under the outer coarse hair is ‘quivut’. It is short fine wool used by indigenous peoples to knit or weave the softest and warmest natural woolen material available. If it’s good enough to keep a musk ox warm in the Arctic winter, it’s good enough for me!
