Description
It’s a fern, it’s a plant, it’s a spiral, it’s a fiddlehead, it’s a loop. Most of all in New Zealand, it is a symbol. It is the koru (Māori for "loop"), a spiral shape based on the appearance of a new unfurling silver fern frond. It is an integral symbol in Māori art, carving and tattooing, where it symbolizes new life, growth, strength and peace. The young unfurling fronds are called fiddleheads because of their resemblance to the head and neck of a violin, They start out tightly curled at the base of the root and then slowly unroll themselves much like a scroll unrolls as they grow in a response to light.
